Ideas For Using First Aid Kits To Prepare For Emergencies

by Alexis Montgomery

If you're always fumbling through the medicine cabinet when you need a bandage, then you should think about getting organized so that you're prepared for an emergency. One way to do that is to buy a first aid kit from a medical supply store. These come packaged with the basics you might need in case of an injury. Here are some ideas for using first aid kits for emergency preparation.

Keep A Comprehensive First Aid Kit In Your Home

Buy a quality first aid kit for your home so you can quickly treat cuts and burns. A good kit should contain a variety of bandages, tweezers, ice pack, topical antibiotics, over-the-counter pain relievers, scissors, gloves, alcohol wipes, and a space blanket. All the supplies can be kept in a bag or box that is easy to grab. A first aid kit comes with supplies already stocked, but you can also add to it if you have unique needs for a medical condition. Keep the kit in a handy location where it can be found easily in an emergency.

Carry A First Aid Kit In Your Car

It's also a good idea to carry a kit in your car. You may want to keep it in the glove box in case you can't get to the trunk. In addition to bandages and medical supplies, you may also want to include a couple of bottles of water and snacks in case you're stranded on the road. It's also a good idea to carry blankets or a space blanket so you can keep warm if your car breaks down in cold weather. Be sure to change the water and snacks regularly so that they stay fresh. Also, keep track of the expiration dates on any medication you pack so that you know when to replace it.

Take A Small First Aid Kit To Work

While a comprehensive kit would take up too much room, you can buy a small first aid kit that fits perfectly in a drawer at work. These are handy to have around when you get a paper cut or stab yourself with a staple. You can care for minor injuries at your desk and possibly prevent getting an infection in a cut that wasn't treated promptly.

Create A Kit For Survival

If you stay prepared for natural disasters, you may want to include a first aid kit in your survival supplies. This is a kit you may need to grab and take with you to a shelter or your designated safe house. You'll want to pack as many supplies as you can in a small space so that the kit is useful and easy to carry. In addition to medical supplies, you may want to include a flashlight, multi-purpose tool, snacks, batteries, gloves, face masks, and medications you might need.

Hopefully, you'll never need to use your first aid kit, but minor accidents happen all the time, and you never know when you'll need ointment for a small burn or a bandage for a minor cut. Having supplies organized and easy to find makes your life less frustrating.
